On April 7, at its 22nd Anniversary Awards Gala at Espace in New York City, Shared Interest honored the following change-makers of Southern Africa: UN Women's Executive Director, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka; Antony Bugg-Levine, chair Global Impact Investing Network and CEO of the Non-Profit Finance Fund; Artists United Against Apartheid (AUAA); and Pepsico Inc. The evening's major sponsors included the Bergman Family, South African Airways, Prudential and Walden Asset Management.
In accepting Shared Interest corporate honoree award, Lynn Haaland, Pepsico Inc.'s SVP, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer noted, "Shared Interest exemplifies that spirit of service Nelson Mandela used to talk about - that as human beings, we have the power to overcome and eradicate poverty. Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. And I know that the effort to bring about systemic changes will enable South and Southern Africans' economically disenfranchised communities to sustain themselves is better and stronger because Shared Interest is engaged."
Actor, activist and Shared Interest Advisory Board member, Danny Glover helped pay tribute to participating artists and filmmakers involved in AUAA's album and video, Sun City.
Nona Hendryx, filmmaker Jonathan Demme and Bill Schechter, brother of AUAA catalyst, Danny Schechter, helped celebrate this milestone 30th anniversary. Guests enjoyed a spirited performance over dinner by the dynamic Malagasy singer and environmental activist, Razia Said, and through the evening, the special sparkle of this year's host, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle.
